Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has been handed a two-year contract extension after leading the team to the play-offs in two of the last three seasons.

Lewis, who led the Bengals to a surprising 9-7 record in the 2011 campaign and a play-off spot, is in his 10th season with the Bengals, the most by a head coach in franchise history.

The deal will keep him with the franchise through the 2014 season.

"Coming off a playoff finish last year, with a solid coaching staff and good young players, continuity at the top gives us our best chance to do well," said Bengals president Mike Brown.

"We are excited about the team's prospects and happy to have completed this process with Marvin before the 2012 pre-season schedule begins."

Lewis has led Cincinnati to three play-off appearances and has won two AFC North Division titles since being named head coach in 2003.

"Our goal is to win the Super Bowl, nothing less, and it's great to have this extension in place," said Lewis.
"We have a lot of work to do in order to maximize the potential we have, and it's exciting to me to come work at it every day."
