Australian sprinter Ortensia found conditions to her liking at Glorious Goodwood in the Gordon's King George Stakes and produced a classy display under William Buick.
A Group One winner in her homeland as well as in Dubai during the winter, big things were expected of Paul Messara's mare when she arrived on these shores earlier this season.
However, she failed to fire when joint-favourite for the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot but ran a creditable enough race to finish fourth in the July Cup in testing conditions.
Sent off the 6-1 joint-favourite dropping back down to Group Two level, the seven-year-old was towards the rear early on before being unleashed down the centre of the track by William Buick.
Once she found top gear, she soon dashed to the lead and passed the post a ready winner by a length and a quarter.
The four-year-old Spirit Quartz ran another fine race to fill the runner-up spot and is undoubtedly one for the future, with Masamah rounding off the top three.
Bit Confusing
The winner was being supervised by Newmarket trainer Toby Coles who said: "To be fair I've not had to do much with her, I've just been overseeing things. The Royal Ascot run was a bit confusing but she ran a great race at Newmarket on ground she had never seen before."It wouldn't be professional of me to say what she is going to do next, that's up to Paul but I hope she stays."
Buick said: "She was head and shoulders above the rest of them. I wanted to be just sitting behind the leaders, I don't think she'd ever been downhill before and Paul said that I shouldn't ask her to do anything she didn't want to do. I think she'd be better over six furlongs but York (Nunthorpe) would be fine for her.
"Obviously she'll be going back to Australia soon but I'd like it if she stayed."
A return home will be imminent but Messara tweeted from Australia: "Ortensia will now contest the Nunthorpe at York (August 24). Can't wait!"
